Joel Kinnaman to play Rick Flag

A few weeks ago it was confirmed that Tom Hardy would be leaving the Suicide Squad film, where he was due to play Rick Flag, the leader of the Suicide Squad. His departure was due to scheduling conflicts with his new film The Revenant and the promotional tour for Mad Max: Fury Road.

It was thought that Jake Gyllenhaal was going to take up the role, but he reportedly turned it down and now it looks like Joel Kinnaman is going to take up the role. Nothing has been confirmed by Warner Bros. as of yet, but it’s thought this is a done deal.

For those of you that don’t know Kinnaman he had a strong career in his native Sweden before taking a leading role in the US version of The Killing, where he is a stand out actor. He has later went on to have roles in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the recent Robocop re-boot where he played the lead and is also in the up coming Run All Night with Liam Neeson and Child 44 with Tom Hardy himself.

I’m excited for this, not as much as I was for Tom Hardy as I think he is one of the stand-out actors in Hollywood just now, but Kinnaman is a solid actor and this could be his break out role. If you haven’t seen him in The Killing, I suggest you catch it, it’s fantastic television with all seasons on Netflix.

What do you think of Kinnaman replacing Hardy?

Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevigne is in UK cinemas 4th August 2016.
