Spider-Man joins Marvel Cinematic Universe

Massive news broke during the night that after months of rumours, Spider-Man has finally joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The rumours started after the Sony email hacking, but last night both Marvel and Sony confirmed they will be jointly working on future Spider-Man films, with Kevin Feige joining as a producer in the films Sony make.

Also confirmed last night is that Spider-Man will appear in a Marvel film before getting his first (in the MCU) stand-alone film in 2017.

One can only think what film it could be but with Spider-Man having such a massive influence in the Civil War storyline in the comics could we see him join Captain America 3? If this were to happen, it would need to be done fast with Captain America Civil War to start filming very shortly. Either way, putting 2 and 2 together means we will see Spider-Man in either Captain America: Civil War or Doctor Strange, as it’s unlikely we will see him in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 before his stand-alone film.

Now to the role of Spider-Man, who will play your friendly neighbourhood hero? Will Andrew Garfield continue in the role? Or will it be someone new?

Of the last Spider-Man films, Garfield was head and shoulders the best thing about them, but will Marvel want someone in their 30’s playing Spider-Man over the next few years? I have a feeling we will see a new actor take up the role, with it being announced very shortly, I could be wrong though. Who would be your choice for Spider-Man?

This new film also has a knock-on effect on the Marvel timelines for Phase 3, with Spider-Man taking the release date of Thor: Ragnarok, each film thereafter is bumped back a release, the full list is now:

6th May 2016 – Captain America: Civil War
4th November 2016 – Doctor Strange
5th May 2017 – Guardians of the Galaxy 2
28th July 2017 – New Spider-Man film
3rd November 2017 – Thor: Ragnarok
4th May 2018 – Avengers: Infinity War Part 1
6th July 2018 – Black Panther
2nd November 2018 – Captain Marvel
3rd May 2019 – Avengers: Infinity War Part 2
12th July 2019 – Inhumans

Notice, that both Avengers films haven’t moved date, its just the stand-alone films being bumped.

Everything considered, this is fantastic news for those Marvel fans and also for Sony, they have struggled where to take Spider-Man after the somewhat disappointing Amazing Spider-Man 2 and we can assume from the news, that both the Sinister Six and Venom spinoff films have been binned, for the time being anyway.

*UPDATE*

It’s now been confirmed thanks to the Wall Street Journal that Spider-Man will indeed feature in Captain America: Civil War.
