Top 5 Marvel Cinematic Universe Characters

With Marvel’s Phase 2 coming to an end next May with The Avengers: Age of Ultron, I felt it was time to look back at the best 5 characters of the 10 movies we have had so far in Phases 1 and 2.

Those films include, The Incredible Hulk, 3 Iron Man films, 2 Thor and Captain America films, Guardians of the Galaxy and of course the first Avengers.

Everyone is going to have their personal favourite character as the list of great characters within the MCU is just never ending, so please, don’t fall out with me if I’m getting this list wrong.

In reverse order we start with :

Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy

5. Rocket Raccoon (Guardians of the Galaxy)

Guardians of the Galaxy was the last film stand-alone film of Phase 2 and possibly the best stand-alone film to date, so it was only right that one of those 5 main characters made it into the list. Rocket is the tech guy of the Guardians team and Bradley Cooper nailed the voice of the character, making him the most lethal, sarcastic and down right hilarious character in our list.

Rocket lit up the GOTG film from the minute he came on screen and was the perfect balance to his best friend Groot.

Bruce Banner as The Hulk

4. Bruce Banner/The Hulk (The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers)

The Hulk had a lot of making up to do after The Incredible Hulk film, it was the poorest of the Phase 1 films and in all honesty the poorest film Marvel have made to date, but, it is a character that people love. Although the first film wasn’t the best film, it certainly wasn’t the worst film ever made, seeing Edward Norton take on the part of Bruce Banner/The Hulk just didn’t entirely work.

When it was confirmed that The Hulk would return for The Avenger is was surprising to see they had re-cast the part and replaced Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo, which seemed very out of left field. But by word did he deliver, not only as Bruce Banner, creating a great scientific ally with Tony Stark, but doing the mo-cap work for The Hulk to help create the best character of The Avengers, he just stole the show.

Agent Coulson

3. Agent Coulson (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, The Avengers and Agents of SHIELD)

Clark Gregg who plays Agent Coulson, the point man for SHIELD has made what is a very minor character within the MCU into one of the most lived characters. With a shape whit and a never say die attitude, Agent Coulson is probably the most popular character in the MCU without any super powers.

Infact the character was so popular that Marvel resurrected him for the TV series Agents of SHIELD after what seemed his demise in The Avengers.

Tony Stark as Iron Man

2. Tony Stark/Iron Man (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man3 and The Avengers)

It was a very tough one to stick Robert Downey Jnr’s fantastic turn(s) as the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist into the 2nd spot in the list, if it wasn’t for RDJ and Iron Man, the MCU probably wouldn’t have got off the ground and to where it is today. Iron Man himself, a great character was never one of the main Marvel characters in the comics, normally playing 2nd fiddle to the likes of Thor, Captain America and The Hulk, but the great casting of RDJ as well as razor sharp scripts have turned this character into the top franchise in the MCU.

The downside at the minute is that Iron Man will be stepping aside from any sequels (for the time being anyway) with RDJ only having a contract to star in the next 2 Avengers films, I think the big question will be for Marvel, will they pay top dollar for another chapter in the Iron Man series with RDJ or will they recast the part like they did with The Hulk?

Loki

1. Loki (Thor, Thor the Dark World and The Avengers)

Has there ever been a villain loved as much as Tom Hiddleston’s Loki? First cropping up as Thor’s brother and ally in Thor, he slowly became the main villain of the piece before cropping up again to help form The Avengers as the villain in the best MCU film to date. Everything about Loki wants you to hate him, but no matter how you try you know that some where in there, he has some good in him as shown in the Thor films.

His star turn in The Avengers is what has put him to the top of the list, the speeches he gives throughout the film and just his general playful villain attitude just brings so much to enjoy on screen and without spoiling too much, I can’t wait to see him again in Thor 3.

There are so many more characters we could of brought into this list, such as the star turn by Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Widow in her many minor parts and of course Thor himself.

Is this how you seen the list playing out? Let us know your favourite MCU characters.
