Suicide Squad

For weeks now we have know that DC Comics and Warner Bros had been working on their Suicide Squad project especially with it’s release of August 2016 already announced and director David Ayer confirmed. There had been some very ambitious casting rumours doing the rounds over the last couple of weeks, but now we can confirm, they weren’t just ambitious, they were spot on, welcome to the new Suicide Squad.

Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flagg
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jared Leto – The Joker
Jai Courtney – Bomerang
Cara Delevigne – Enchantress

My first thoughts are, this is an unbelievable cast, to get both Will Smith and Tom Hardy who are bonafide A-listers, along with the hugely talented Oscar winner, Jared Leto is just fantastic. But to add Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and the up and coming Cara Delevigne, they must have pulled out all the stops.

Thinking about it, DC/WB have been very shrewd about this, they have confirmed the cast, but haven’t confirmed a couple of things, will these characters live within the current DC Universe? Have the actors signed multi-film deals like all the heroes have? With the Suicide Squad an ever evolving group of bag guys turned good, this could mean we only ever get to see Hardy and Smith in 1 film, then they change the roster for a 2nd film (if it does well).

Equally as important in getting those actors into the film must have been the director David Ayer, his last few films have included the excellent End of Watch and WW2 tank film Fury. Having seen those films, I’m not sure who wouldn’t want to work with him and see what he has planned for this comic book movie.

Although I’m a massive Tom Hardy fan, the casting choice that excites me the most is Jared Leto as the Joker, I think this could be genius, my only fear is that everyone goes in comparing his performance to that of the late Heath Ledger.

What do you think of the casting choices?

Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer and starring  Will Smith, Tom Hardy , Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevigne is in UK cinemas 4th August 2016.
