Tonight Marvel took to the stage for 30 minutes to set up their new slate of films for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Announcing a whole raft of new films and release dates for some already know films and some totally new films that were possibly not expected as well as a casting announcement for one of those big films. Below we list the films along with their release dates and some little information know about the films.

Captain America: Civil War – 6th May 2016

Captain America: Civil War

This is the first of the phase 3 films and it’s going to be heavily influenced by not only the after effects of Avengers: Age of Ultron but also the comics based around the Marvel civil war.

The civil war is when the government wants every person with special abilities to be on a register, Captain America is against this and Iron Man is for this, creating a massive conflict between the superheroes.

We already know that Robert Downey Jnr will be feauring heavily in the film after the announcement a week or so ago, but I would also expect further superheroes to be involved in this one, Jeremy Renner has already hinted at his involvement and if you read on, there is already at least one other confirmed for the film.

This film is likely to create the story arc over which phase 3 plays out in lead up to the 3rd Avengers film.

Doctor Strange – 4th November 2016

Doctor Strange

This is a film that was announced but never given a release date, with Scott Derrickson already attached to direct and a whole raft of big actors linked to the lead role, most recently, Benedict Cumberbatch, but as nothing was announced tonight, it’s likely that isn’t a done deal as of yet.

Doctor Stange was already linked at in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so it was only a matter of time before we seen him on the big screen.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – 5th May 2017

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

This was another, like Doctor Strange that was already announced, this even had a release date, but it looks like that has changed slightly, moving the film forward a couple of months from a late Summer release.

It’s already known that the original cast and director would be back for this one, with director James Gunn teasing that we might even find a new member joining the team.

Another small rumour is that the GOTG will have a part to play in the Avengers film at the end of Phase 3, so could we see a super team?

Thor: Ragnarok – 28th July 2017

Thor Ragnarok

There isn’t much know about this film as of yet. It’s been widely rumoured we would get a third Thor film in phase 3, so it’s no major surprise that it’s coming.

One thing that has been confirmed is that Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki along with all the other major Thor cast members.

Black Panther – 3rd November 2017

Black Panther

This was one of the biggest surprises of the night and although there had been rumours of the film in the works, there was nothing to convince people that it would be in Phase 3.

On top of this Marvel brought out our new Black Panther, who will be the hugely talented Chadwick Boseman, star of films such as 42, Draft Day and the James Brown biopic, Get on Up.

On top of the casting news it was also confirmed that he will be teased (maybe seen) in Avengers: Age of Ultron and will be a major player in Captain America: Civil War.

Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 – 4th May 2018 & 3rd May 2019

Avengers Infinity War

The biggest news of the night wasn’t that we were getting a 3rd Avengers film, but we were getting 2 Avengers films in Phase 3 with Infinity War being broke into two parts.

The latest rumours on this film is that with the turmoil in the world that Captain America: Civil War will produce, Thanos will see this as the ideal time to attack. We already know that he has been trying to get a hold of the infinity stones in films such as Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy, so it seems this film is going to be the major face-off between Thanos and earths mightiest heroes.

Captain Marvel – 6th July 2018

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel was another film that will surprise a lot, especially as this will be the film stand alone film that will have a female lead.

A director and screenwriter is expected to be announced soon for this one, but I wouldn’t expect to see any casting announcements on this one for a while yet.

Inhumas – 2nd November 2018

Another film that has been rumoured over the last few months but never confirmed. The Inhumans will be another team movie, much like Guardians of the Galaxy.

There is also a rumour that this is the franchise that Vin Diesel was in talks with Marvel to join and led to him being cast as the voice of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. That doesn’t mean that he won’t be in this film as he has teased on his Facebook that he still could do more work with Marvel outside of his GOTG work, I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes into this one.

There is more…

Ant-man is now being considered a Phase 2 film by Marvel rather than the first film of Phase 3, so we now know of 10 Marvel films in the pipeline for the next 4 years, exciting times if you like your comic book films, with DC Comics also announcing 10 films or so over the next 5 years.

Are you excited for what’s ahead for Marvel? Or do you see this as a superhero overload? I for one, can’t wait to see all these films, so why not check out the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer to get you excited.

It’s also one thing to consider on these release dates, us living in the UK are likely to see these films a week before the date announced for the US, always a good thing.
