Sony have tonight announced a new deal that will bring a 2nd Ghostbusters film to cinemas soon. This film is said to be the first part of a deal Sony signed with Joe and Anthony Russo last week to develop new films with them and its likely they could direct this.

Also as part of the deal, a new sub-division of Sony called Ghost Corps helmed by Dan Akyroyd and Ivan Reitman will help develop the film and be produced by Channing Tatum with a script from Iron Man 3’s Drew Pierce.

It’s also thought that Sony want to get Channing Tatum to lead the film which will launch concurrently with the Paul Feig directed all-female Ghostbusters film.

Sony haven’t confirmed whether these films will live in the same universe of whether this could be something to appease the fan boys outcries of the Feig film, but Ivan Reitman did give this statement on the deal:

“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment,” Reitman told me. “This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following hear. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

Going from the statement it seems we could be getting a lot more than just 2 films, this could be an entire world, ala the MCU all based around Ghostbusters. I love that Sony seem to have so much confidence in the franchise as I’m a huge fan of the originals and if they can get that tone, we could see some great films.

I think once we get confirmation of whether the all-female film is part of the Ghostbusters universe or not, it will tell us how much confidence Sony has in it as a whole.

It now seems there are 4 films in total in the works and that this film along with the all-female film will all live within the same universe.

Add to this that Chris Pratt is also rumoured to be joining Channing Tatum and you have a very meaty franchise.

The chat is that we will get these 2 films, then both groups will come together for a third film, with a fourth film rumoured to be a prequel of some sort.

All in, that’s a lot of Ghostbusters films.
